Photo of Melissa Martin, Registered Psychologist

Welcome!

My name is Melissa.  I am a Registered Psychologist who has over 15 years of experience as a school teacher and counsellor.  In 2016, I obtained my Masters of Education at the University of Calgary, specializing in School and Applied Child Psychology.  I am formally trained in psychoeducational assessments and have completed assessments in school districts and private practice settings.  I have also completed trainings in play therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, internal family systems, motivational interviewing, and crisis intervention.  Currently, I am completing my Advanced Diploma in Art Therapy with the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute.

I feel that being playful, creative, and curious is how we are able to build meaningful connection with others.   As a psychologist, I believe that it is important for me to use these skills to promote effective therapeutic relationships, which can help to inspire growth and change in others.  My approaches to counselling include trauma-informed, evidence-based practices with a foundation in cognitive behavioural therapy along with other sensory-based approaches including art, strengths-based, narrative, and play therapy techniques.

I enjoy helping others discover their inner potential in order to help them achieve their goals.  Working together, I can help guide you towards a better understanding of yourself, your relationships, and your potential for growth!

Adult Counselling

Counselling can be beneficial for those who are looking to strengthen their emotional connection with themselves and others.  I use a strengths-based, client-centred approach to counselling to help with a variety of needs:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • parent coaching
  • trauma and PTSD
  • self-esteem
  • stress and burnout
  • healthy relationships and communication
  • emotional regulation

Child/Teen Counselling*

I enjoy collaborating with youth as well as parents to provide support with a variety of social-emotional and behavioural concerns.  I use a variety of age-appropriate play and arts-based therapy techniques when counselling with youth.  Some of my areas of expertise include:

  • emotional regulation
  • social skills
  • self-esteem
  • healthy relationships
  • stress management
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • ADHD
  • conflict resolution

* Please note that in cases of separation or divorce, verbal and written consent is required from both parents or legal guardian(s) if they share custody.

Art Therapy

Sometimes it can be difficult to express certain thoughts and feelings with words.  Art therapy combines art-making with psychotherapy to offer a safe and supportive method of exploring your inner feelings.  Art therapy can be directive or I am able to provide a supportive role in your own artistic ideas.  Through the creative process, you will be able to gain self-awareness and insight into any struggles or difficulties you may be experiencing in your life.

For online art therapy, you can use any basic art materials that may be at your disposal.  More information about the benefits of art therapy can be found here.

Parent Coaching & Consultation

Parenting can be one of the most rewarding (and sometimes challenging!) responsibilities in adult life.  I believe that parents are often in need of support just as much as children.  I have extensive knowledge and experience in developmental psychology and parenting strategies to help provide parents with the tools they need to best support themselves and their children!
